Monel® 400 Chemical Resistance
For many applications, Monel® 400 offers about the same corrosion resistance as nickel, but with higher maximum working pressures and temperatures, and at a lower cost because of its superior ability to be machined.
- Resistant to seawater and steam at high temperatures as well as to salt and caustic solutions.
- Excellent resistance to rapidly flowing brackish water or seawater.
- Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters
- Particularly resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids when they are de-aerated
- Offers some resistance to hydrochloric and sulfuric acids at modest temperatures and concentrations, but it is seldom the material of choice for these acids.
As would be expected from its high copper content, Alloy 400 is rapidly attacked by nitric acid and ammonia systems
Monel® has very good mechanical properties at temperatures below zero. Melting point is 2370-2460°F.

Monel® 400 Nickel Alloy
UNS Number 04400
QQ-N-281
Monel® 400 is a nickel-copper (about 67% Ni-23% Cu), solid solution alloy, that can to be hardened only by cold working. With high strength and toughness over a wide range of temperatures and excellent resistance in corrosive environments, Monel® 400 is used in many fields, especially marine, oil and chemical processing.
Typical applications are:
- Chemical processing equipment
- Gasoline and fresh water tanks
- Crude petroleum stills
- Valves and pumps
- Pump and propeller shafts
- Marine fixtures and fasteners
- Electrical and electronic components
- Deaerating heaters.
- Process vessels and piping
- Boiler feed water heaters and other heat exchangers
Monel® 400 can be used at temperatures up to 1000 ºF. Also, the alloy has great mechanical properties at subzero temperatures.
Chemical Composition:
| Element | Avg. Nominal % |
|---|---|
| Nickel | Balance |
| Cobalt | 1.0 Max |
| Copper | 30 |
| Iron | 2.5 |
| Carbon | 0.15 Max |
| Silicon | 0.50 Max |
Fabrication with Monel® 400
By proper control of the amount of hot or cold work and by the selection of appropriate thermal treatments, finished fabrications can be produced to a rather wide range of mechanical properties.
Monel® 400 can be easily welded by gas - tungsten arc, gas - metal arc or shielded metal arc processes using appropriate filler metals. There is no need for post weld heat treatment, but thorough cleaning after welding is critical for optimum corrosion resistance, otherwise there is the risk of contamination and embrittlement.
Like most other nickel alloys, Monel® 400 is typically tough to machine and will work harden. However, if you make the correct choices for tooling and machining, very good results can be obtained.
Hot working can be done in the temperature range 1130 - 900 deg C. Softer than many steels, Monel® 400 be hot-formed into almost any shape.
