Monel® K-500 Chemical Resistance
The corrosion resistance of Monel® K-500 is substantially equivalent to that of Monel® alloy 400 except that, when in the age-hardened condition, Monel® alloy K-500 has a greater tendency toward stress-corrosion cracking in some environments. 1.
- Resistant to a sour-gas environment.
- Excellent resistance to high velocity sea water.
- Alloy is non-magnetic.
Monel® K-500 has very good mechanical properties at temperatures below zero. Melting range is 2400-2460°F.

Monel® K-500 Nickel Alloy
UNS Number 05500
NACE MR-01-75
QQ-N-286

Monel® alloy K-500 is a nickel-copper alloy, precipitation hardenable through additions of aluminum and titanium. Monel® alloy K-500 retains the excellent corrosion resistant characteristics of Monel® alloy 400 and has enhanced strength and hardness after precipitation hardening when compared with Monel® alloy 400. Monel® alloy K-500 has approximately three (3) times the yield strength and double the tensile strength when compared with Monel® alloy 400. Monel® alloy K-500 can be further strengthened by cold working before the precipitation hardening.
Typical applications are:
- Sour-gas service applications
- Pump shafts and impellers in marine service
- Safety lifts and valves for oil and gas production.
- Oil well drill collars and instruments
- Doctor blades and scrapers for pulp processing in paper production.
- Chains, cables, springs and fasteners for marine service.
- Pump and valve components for chemical processing

Fabrication with Monel® K-500

Monel® K-500 is readily fabricated by standard commercial procedures.
Welding alloy Monel® K-500 is best accomplished by the gas-tungsten-arc welding process. 1. The Walloy should be annealed when welded and the weldment then stress relieved before aging.
Heavy machining of Monel® K-500 is best accomplished when the material is in the annealed condition or hot-worked and quenched condition. Age-hardened material, however can be finish-machined to close tolerances and fine finishes. The recommended practice, therefore is to machine slightly oversize, age-harden, then finish to size. During aging, a slight permanent contraction takes place, but little warpage occurs because of the low temperatures and slow cooling rates involved.
